| About a year ago, my brain broke and it hasn’t been the same since. I came to call the episodes where I would feel hopelessly, utterly lost The Depressions. It was a new kind of lost; one I’d never experienced before. Like being underwater without the will to come up for air. Like not remembering what I was just thinking about, even though it was really important. Like feeling so so so so so full of grief for no reason (which means every reason). Unlike clinical depression, as I understand it, my Depressions would come and go. But for them to go, I had to surrender to them. So I would lie on the floor and cry, call girlfriends and schedule sessions with my naturopath, and try not to think too much about the raging ocean inside of me. And like the hot flashes and night sweats, within hours or days or a week, suddenly they’d be gone and I would be shivering, wondering…what just happened? When I try to point at what created the conditions for The Depressions, I inevitably ended up waving my hands… everywhere… and crying.Maybe it was having C0vid 3 times… Or is it perimenopause? Maybe it was the separation from my kids’ dad… Or is it perimenopause? Maybe it was the horror funding a genoc!de… Or is it perimenopause? Maybe it was my partner, or just…men… Or is it perimenopause? Maybe it was raising boys inside of patriarchy… Or is it perimenopause? Maybe it was having anti-age crap shoved in my face relentlessly… Or is it perimenopause? Maybe it was wishing I lived with all my best friends… Or is it perimenopause? Maybe it’s passed-down apartheid trauma… Or is it perimenopause? You know… all of it. And a whole bunch more – some of which I remember and some of which I don’t, because I can’t remember a lot these days. All I know is, it can be hard to be in a rapidly changing body in a rapidly changing world. Here’s what I have been learning from the wise women way on the other side of menopause… This is normal. Especially inside of colonial-capitalist-patriarchy. Of course. What matters is how we contextualize the changes we are undergoing, and what we choose to do with the energy moving through us. Because the changes of midlife – whether one is just starting to feel them, or feels fully initiated by them and on the “other side” – are here in part to serve a profound cultural and spiritual purpose… Initiating us into our deepest leadership yet. The work of shifting us away from the lies that keep our bodies and spirits in the mode of fracking, hacking, and hyper-tracking moment-to-moment, instead of being wildly nourished weavers of a more beautiful world, is deep and ongoing work… Work this powerful requires crossing a threshold.
